Citation for the President of Uzbekistan. 2001

Written out in Black stick ink, gouache and 23k gold leaf on Arches paper.
The name is illuminated in keeping with appropriate cultural references. Although these type of pieces tend to be formal, I try to enliven them with writing that is alive and details that are uniquely suited to the person or occasion. The life of writing as understood by calligraphers, who after all are the originators of such documents, is nothing like a computer font. One can "feel" the difference. Fonts try to imitate this look and feel, but to the aware eye, there is no comparison. This one is done on rag paper. The other major surface is vellum.
